Since I retired as a Georgia Tech Professor, after twenty-seven years, Harvard Alumnus, I have tutored over 975 students in all subjects areas on both the ACT and SAT college entrance exams. It is my concerted opinion; however, that the ACT is, for the vast majority of students, 98%, the superior exam, for a multiplicity of reasons. The principle advantage is that on the ACT, the subjects are clearly delineated, for example English, Math, Reading, and Science. On English test on the ACT there are a finite number of grammar questions and a finite number of structural and punctuation questions; whereas, on the SAT they tend to glom every subject into an English and Math score Equivalent, confusing the students. The ACT material tested on its exam has changed very little during the last fifteen to twenty years: where the SAT continues to be a “moving target” and have changes in both the materials and format of the SAT exam every 24 +_ months, adding significant confusion on the preparation of their exam.
I have two doctorates, one from The Georgia Institute of Technology in Engineering Mathematics, and one from Harvard University in Special Education (ADA IEP/504).
I tutor, in retirement, because I love teaching, and it is personally very rewarding for me to see “my students” get admitted into the colleges and universities to which they deserve to be admitted. As a Harvard Alumnus, I have stayed very well informed on the part the ACT plays in the admissions and scholarship awarding process of both the Ivy League schools and with the country’s other top performing colleges and universities.
I only tutor “one-on-one”, this process, based on an M.I.T. study in 2001, “is at least 500% more efficient than any form of group or online tutoring”.
I first administer a series of diagnostic tests to each student and then analyze each of their results, with the student. I then develop a “Teaching Plan” that is specifically tailored to your student’s strengths, learning process, and weaknesses. I still cover 100% of the substantive material, but will carve out specific time for any subject deficiency, like trigonometric transformations, for example.
Approximately 20% of my students get accepted into Ivy League Schools; however, I tutor students at all levels, including adults who decide to return to obtain their college degrees. I work with all “IEP and 504” students. I am dyslexic, with two dyslexic daughters, and fully understand the process requirements from the student’s perspective, the parent’s perspective, as well as the teacher’s perspective, and their effect on standardized testing.
